another 'not a journal block'

A quilted pillow, "Healing Hands", I made for a friend who has a passion for healing. I sketched the hands with a fine tip purple marker on mottled light yellow fabric. I used oil pastels to enhance the 'light' around the hands. Then added the border and quilted.

Journal block 45 in 2009

This is my home made extension sewing table, we made it from a piece of Plexiglas we have had laying around for years, the legs are made from PVC connectors, I cut circles from a rubber jar opener and glued them to each end so it would not slide.

More free motion, I'm trying to get more control with speed and movement of the material, thinking out what you want to do is probably key, I didn't and encountered several problems. Also itsy bitsy details seem harder to accomplish than medium size. All I knew when I started this was I wanted to try pumpkins, vines and leaves. Hopefully with practice I will improve, regardless I am having loads of fun.

Spray painting

The paint is air brush paint in a small spritzer bottle. Very, very diluted with water. Probably 10-20 drops paint in one ounce water. Wish I had known about this before buying fabric for my last project. Much less expensive and a whole lot more fun.
The pictures came out a bit pale. The fabric is a good deal darker.

Used foam brush on wet fabric.

Sprayed wet fabric.

Crumpled wet fabic. Sprayed one side. Turned over and sprayed other side. Used pink and purple. The fabric is slightly darker than photo.

This paint was not diluted with water. The small piece of fabric was crumpled. The larger one was laying flat.

Journal block 36 of 2009

Just stitching, I'm having a problem with free motion stitching so I did this with a narrow zigzag straight stitch. It would be much better done with free motion. Also easier.

Week 37 - 2009

Not a pattern folks. I put stripes of paper on fabric and free motion stitched around them. I saw on Quilting Arts they used masking tape for patterns and stitched around them. I was afraid of getting the needle in the tape and getting gooey so did it my way. Paper and glue stick.

Week 36 - 2009

The finished sqares ended up being slightly more than one inch. Sorta hard to get them even. The entire block is fairly small.

From the scrap bag which is getting pretty full.

Week 34 - 2009

Free motion quilting trying to follow design in fabric. Not as easy as I thought.

Not a journal block

My oldest daughter celebrated her 50th birthday this year. Members of our family wrote some of the things we love about her. Her sister and neice printed and framed the document for her. I made the quilt with as many of the sayings as I could. Combining and sadly omitted a few. Hopefully everytime she wraps herself in the quilt she will feel wrapped in our love.

Week 33 2009

Oil pastels and freezer paper for seagull stencils. Quilted using blended thread. That is Jonathan Livingston at the top. Doing all he ever wanted to do and flying higher than he ever flew before. :-) I learned to love Jonathan thanks to my youngest son. I made a quilt for him years ago that protrayed Jonathan flying high. Wish I had pictures of all the quilts I have made.
